Students planning to satisfy the long paper requirement in this course, must also register for SEM 6026.

This course will provide a general overview to key legal issues in public and private education. The course will focus on understanding Minnesota and federal constitutions, statutes, case law, and policies. Key legal concepts include: history of public schools and the legal systems; governance and finance of public schools; church and state; free speech; desegregation; search and seizure; students with disabilities; compulsory attendance and student rights in statutes, common law and the constitutions; teacher rights in statutes, common law and constitutions; and school liability. Particular emphasis will be placed on core legal concepts and practice skills. Blended courses open to all J.D. students. 

Prerequisites
