LAW-3291: Health Privacy and Ethics Lab

This experiential, skills-based laboratory course prepares students to serve as effective healthcare privacy professionals by applying healthcare privacy law, compliance principles, and ethical decision-making to realistic organizational challenges. Building upon foundational knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, and healthcare privacy regulation, students assume the role of healthcare privacy officers responsible for managing privacy programs, investigating incidents, conducting risk assessments, responding to breaches, advising executive leadership, and developing organizational policies.Through immersive simulations, case studies, and team-based projects, students will address contemporary issues involving artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital health technologies, health information governance, business associate relationships, documentation practices, fraud, waste and abuse, workforce training, and regulatory enforcement. Students will learn to evaluate complex privacy risks while balancing legal obligations, ethical responsibilities, patient trust, and organizational objectives. The course is informed by nationally recognized healthcare privacy competency frameworks and is designed to complement the Health Care Privacy Certificate (CHPC) by strengthening students' practical understanding of healthcare privacy operations and governance.
