This course examines the laws, regulations, and legal theories designed to protect consumers in the marketplace. Topics may include unfair and deceptive trade practices, consumer credit, debt collection, advertising and marketing, consumer financial services, warranties, and available remedies under federal and state law. Students will explore the roles of legislatures, courts, and administrative agencies in regulating consumer transactions and addressing market misconduct.


The course considers the balance between consumer protection and commercial freedom while examining contemporary issues such as online commerce, data privacy, and emerging technologies. Through case law, statutes, and regulatory materials, students will develop skills in statutory interpretation, regulatory analysis, and the application of consumer protection law to real-world disputes and compliance challenges.
